For Employees (会社員)
If your side income exceeds ¥200,000/year, you must file a tax return (確定申告). This includes profit from Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, etc.
What Counts as Expenses?
- Original purchase price of items
- Platform fees (Mercari 10%, etc.)
- Shipping costs you paid
- Packaging materials
- Transportation to post office
Filing Deadline
Tax returns (確定申告) are due by March 15 for the previous year's income. File at your local tax office or online via e-Tax.
Personal Items Exception
Selling personal items (clothes, furniture) at a loss is generally not taxable. But regular reselling for profit is treated as business income.
